How I met my Lineman
Even having been from rival schools, graduating the exact same year, and knowing people from the same friend groups, my lineman and I had never crossed paths. As fate would have it, though, we had one mutual friend - a friend of mine, whose heart mine has known for a very long time, Kayla.
It was the weekend of Kayla’s birthday and my ONLY job amongst our group of friends was to get Kayla to a restaurant (on time) where all of our friends were waiting for a surprise birthday dinner. She was told that just she and I would be having dinner that evening, so she was at a pool hall shooting pool with her friend Jeremy. In regular Cheylene fashion, I arrived at the pool hall to pick her up.. at least 10 minutes behind schedule. She had previously called me to let me know that she was playing pool with a friend and asked if she could invite him to tag along with us to dinner. Just trying to be sure that she was ready when I got there, I said yes. As I pulled into the parking lot, realizing that she was not quickly going to come outside, I walked into the pool hall to rush her along. Standing near the back wall was a guy whose name I didn’t know and face I didn’t recognize.
Immediately, he rushed to the door of the pool hall and introduced himself to me. Shaking my hand, he said, “My name is Jeremy and I think an angel just walked into this room.” I knew then and there that I was in for an eventful night.
Arriving at the restaurant, with all of our friends there waiting, every single person in attendance was coupled, leaving two chairs side-by-side for Jeremy and myself. We sat down next to each other and the waitress began taking orders. When she got to our side of the table, she asked if we were together. He immediately said, “Absolutely. You put whatever she wants on my bill.” He didn’t even know my last name at this point - and I’m honestly not sure that he even
remembered how to pronounce my first. Nevertheless, he insisted on paying for my meal.
After dinner, we all went to a local business for a few drinks and a benefit auction. Here, we were able to chat a little bit more. He was SO funny and I knew that I needed more time. When the auction was over, he invited all of our friends to go back to his place for a bonfire. I insisted on all of the necessities to make s’mores. Together, we went into Walmart for graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate. Of course he paid and even splurged on namebrand cinnamon
graham crackers, no matter how many times I told him that I was perfectly okay with generic, and a 24-pack of Coke Zero.
Pulling out all of his tricks. The only thing running through my mind during the drive to “his place” was that I was getting ready to pull into his mom’s driveway. At this point, I still have no idea how old he is or what he does for work. Pulling into the driveway, I realize that I didn’t give them enough credit. He’s really got it together. His home is gorgeous, he’s a total gentleman and shows me around the entire place, and even gives me a T-shirt to change into because I was freezing in my dress from earlier that evening (I had shorts in my vehicle). Everyone sat around his fire pit, told stories, laughed, and enjoyed every minute of the evening. He even invited me to a slow dance next to the fire (which is where I took the reins and we shared our first kiss). Minutes turned into hours and soon we were the only two left around the fire pit, everyone else having gone inside to sleep. Jeremy and I sat around that fire pit until 4 o’clock in the morning talking about life, our heart aches, where we hoped to be years from now. I had never met a man like this. Coming from so many bad things, you could have never convinced me that all of his moves were sincere. I knew this game, I’d become a pro at this game myself. After the hour of 4 AM, I knew it was time for me to leave. It’d been a long time since I’d stayed out this late. Being the gentleman that he is, he offered to sleep on his couch and let me sleep in his bedroom. I decided to go on home (my furbaby waiting for me), but let him know that I would chat with him again when I woke up the next morning. Before I ever made it home, I had a text from him with some of the sweetest words that I’d heard in a long time. Could this really go somewhere?
That Sunday morning, in reality more toward Sunday afternoon, I woke and immediately texted him for the rest of the day. The following Monday he was rained out and I had the day off. He invited me over for dinner - dinner that we cooked together and enjoyed curled up on the couch.
Though there are a million more stories, the rest is history. I just never left!
It was like I’d known this man my entire life and, up until this point, he had been a complete stranger. And though it took him quite some time to break down my walls, I am unbelievably thankful, and can confirm, that there ARE good men, like my lineman, left in this world. Fast forward to exactly one year from our “official” relationship date, my lineman and I eloped in a small ceremony with our family and closest friends. Our life has been on a fast track to
adventure since then and my heart will forever be grateful for an evening with the perfect stranger
